Smorgasburg, an amazing outdoor food market, happens in two locations every weekend: Saturdays on the Williamsburg waterfront and Sundays on the DUMBO waterfront at the historic Tobacco Warehouse in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Both locations are open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and feature a “smorgasbord” of fresh and interesting foods, beverages, and more from 75-100 vendors from New York City and across the region. The markets are always open rain or shine, but obviously sunny is better. And Sunday was sunny, so Smorgasbord it was!
From Rob’s subway stop, Wall Street, DUMBO (as are most neighborhoods in NYC, DUMBO is an acronym: Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is just one stop away on the 2,3 line. You just have to pass under the East River to Clark Street, the first stop inside Brooklyn on that line. A very easy commute to this beautiful part of the city!
When we arrived at Smorgasbord, we simply couldn’t decide what to try. There were so many amazing options and all sorts of ethnic foods represented. After first grabbing a mint lemonade (YUM) while Rob grabbed a bite, I surveyed the premises to see how we should prioritize the rest of our sampling. Decisions, decisions! There was too much to try, but we ended up sampling a lamb burger, a Moroccan sausage sandwich, carnitas tacos, mint lemonade, honey iced tea, and a vanilla malted milkshake. The pigs in a blanket vendor made me think of my sister!
Smorgasbord reminded me very much of my favorite food market in London, Borough Market, with all its variety and fresh food vendors. After so much deliciousness, it was time to walk it off along the river. To the right was the Manhattan Bridge, and to the left was the Brooklyn Bridge, with the newly completed Freedom Tower (with its spire afixed, it’s the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere!). Isn’t this scene below so picturesque?! I loved seeing all the kids running around playing with their kites, toys, each other… a beautiful day in the park.
And then we kept walking along the river and found this little urban beach that we just loved. We even spotted a proposal by the rocks! She said yes :). So many people were out and about trying to soak up the sunshine (even if it was windy with a chill in the air). And then, common as it is in New York City, we stumbled upon a film set! A truck was going up and down a cobblestone street spraying it with water to make it look like it had rained. Then a fire truck came barreling down the road, clearing out all the spectators trying to catch a glimpse. I have a feeling it was the filming of the upcoming Spiderman movie, mostly because of this photo here. Kinda fun catching films in the making!
